Destiny 2 Sunbreaker: Best Builds, Exotics & Fragments

by | Feb 1, 2024

Sunbreaker is one of the five Titan subclasses available in Destiny 2. As of Season of the Wish (S23), Sunbreaker is one of the strongest subclasses in the entire game.

This guide covers the best Sunbreaker Titan builds, Fragments, and Exotics that make Sunbreaker such an exceptionally powerful subclass.

What is Sunbreaker in Destiny 2?

Sunbreaker is the name of the Solar-based subclass available to Titans in Destiny 2.

Best Sunbreaker Fragments & Exotics

Titan Solar 3.0 featured

Sunbreaker (Solar 3.0)

  • Ranking: S Best

The Sunbreaker Titan has always been a reliable choice since the Red War. Solar 3.0 made Sunbreaker one of the best subclasses for solo content by making your titan almost impossible to kill. Sunbreaker has some of the best access to the Solar 3.0 mechanics, such as restoration and cure, which allow it to survive situations where other subclasses would fail.

Preferred Exotic: Loreley Splendor Helm, Phoenix Cradle, and Hallowfire Heart are examples of exotics that synergize well with Sunbreaker and Solar 3.0. Synthoceps are another great choice for Throwing Hammer builds and are considered the best overall choice. Plus, the new Pyrogale Gauntlets (we cover how to get the Pyrogale Gauntlets here) can vastly improve most Solar builds.

Preferred Aspects and Fragments:

  • Aspects: Roaring Flames and Sol Invictus are the bread and butter of most Sunbreaker builds. Consecration can be built around but lacks the diversity that the other aspects offer.
  • Fragments: Ember of Char, Ember of Eruption, Ember of Solace, Ember of Torches.

Preferred Abilities and Stats:

  • Stats: Resilience, Discipline, Strength.
  • Abilities: Both Hammer of Sol and Burning Maul are solid choices for the super. Throwing Hammer is the better of the two melees. Being able to pick up the hammer and use it at range makes it the best choice. Thermite and Solar Grenades are the best for ad-clear whilst the healing provided by the Healing Grenade makes these the go-to choices.

Sunbreaker Titan builds for PvE

These are some of the best Destiny 2 Sunbreaker builds right now; you can find more excellent Titan builds here:

Titan Solar 3.0 featured

Undying Flame

Excels In: Solo, Endgame, Grandmasters.

Goal of the Build: This build aims to create an unkillable Titan by harnessing the power of Solar 3.0 and the Loreley Splendor exotic helm.

Mandatory gear: Loreley Splendor Helm. Solar weapons are recommended.

  • Aspects: Sol Invictus and Roaring Flames (for endgame content) or Consecration (fun and solid too).
  • Fragments: Ember of Solace, Ember of Singeing, Ember of Empyrean, and Ember of Torches.
  • Abilities: Healing Grenade for extra survivability or Solar Grenade for add clear. Throwing Hammer, Rally Barricade.
  • Stats: Max Resilience.
  • Mods:
      • Helmet: Siphon matching your subclass.
    • Arms: Heavy Handed.
    • Chest: Resistance Mods based on your enemies.
    • Legs: -
    • Class Item: -

Gameplay Loop

This is one of the easiest and most straightforward builds for Titan. It requires little to no setup and functions extremely well in all levels of content.

This build revolves around the Loreley Splendor exotic helmet. Its exotic perk, “Cauterizing Flame,” creates a sunspot upon barricade cast or when you are critically wounded. This allows you to get the Restoration buff which regenerates your health and shields over time. This cannot be stopped by damage and only runs out when the buff itself runs out. Ember of Solace increases this duration.

Ember of the Empyrean allows you to maintain this restoration buff by chaining solar weapon kills to refresh the duration. Opting for Synthoceps instead of Loreley Splendor removes your barricade from the loop, but the whole idea of throwing your hammer over and over at enemies stays the same.

Solar supers

Consecrated Ground

Excels In: Endgame (Dungeons, Raids, Legend content)

Goal of the Build: Set the battlefield ablaze as your Solar cyclones lay waste to all that stand before you, and use the scorch to start the cycle again.

Mandatory gear: Pyrogale Gauntlets. A weapon with Incandescent is recommended, as the scorch will help refund melee energy.

  • Aspects: Sol Invictus and Consecration.
  • Fragments: Ember of Ashes, Ember of Searing, Ember of Empyrean, and Ember of Torches.
  • Abilities: Solar grenade, Throwing Hammer, Burning Maul.
  • Stats: Resilience 🡒 Recovery 🡒 Strength.
  • Mods:
    • Helmet: Melee Kickstart, Heavy Handed.
    • Chest: Relevant Resistance Mods, Charged Up.
    • Legs: Solar Surge OR Invigoration.
    • Class Item: Outreach, Reaper.

Gameplay Loop

Pyrogale Gauntlets’ perk “Percussive Flames” not only transforms Burning Maul into a one-slam Super with massive damage, but also makes your Consecration melee a mini version of this. Using the right kit, you can litter the battlefield with flames.

Simply slide into a group of enemies and use your melee ability to start the Consecration melee, and then melee again to slam back down. Scorched targets will ignite if hit by the second attack, which means anything hit by both waves will ignite. Defeat any remaining scorched targets and grab Orbs to refund the rest of your melee. Be sure to use the Sunspots from Sol Invictus to boost your ability regen further.

When using Burning Maul, it is important to note that you can cast it from a safe distance and then close the gap before slamming due to it being a one-off Super with Pyrogale’s.

Sunbreaker Subclass in PvP (Solar 3.0)

Sunbreaker (Solar 3.0)

  • Ranking: C Weak

Solar Subclass Destiny 2 iconWhilst not as strong as other solar subclasses in PVP, Sunbreaker can still be used effectively when built correctly. Building into the healing aspects of Solar 3.0 allows Sunbreaker to become very sustainable and can supply teammates with buffs such as Restoration or Radiant.

Preferred Exotic: Loreley Splendor and The Path of Burning Steps are the best Solar-based exotics for PVP. Lorely Splendor adds a lot of survivability to Sunbreaker, and The Path of Burning Steps makes a great base for a weapon-focused playstyle.

Exotic Perk: "Solar final blows periodically grant you an escalating bonus to weapon damage, and Solar grenade final blows grant you the highest bonus. You are harder to slow or freeze with Stasis, and when you break out, you take no damage from doing so, creating a burst of Solar energy around yourself."

Preferred Aspects and Fragments:

  • Aspects: Sol Invictus is what a PVP focus Sunbreaker is built around. The healing and ability regeneration is key and cannot be overlooked. Roaring Flames can allow for certain abilities to one shot and is useful to keep the momentum of a fight going. Builds created around Consecration can be used for a more casual and fun playstyle for 6v6 game modes.
  • Fragments: Ember of Beams, Ember of Combustion, Ember of Wonder, Ember of Eruption.

Preferred Abilities and Stats:

  • Stats: Recovery, Discipline, Resilience
  • Abilities: Hammer of Sol serves as one of the best roaming supers due to its duration and ranged capabilities. Burning Maul is more niche but can be used to counter other supers. Hammer Strike is the best melee. Like the other shoulder charge melees, it offers more mobility and the potential for fast shotgun-melee combos. All the solar grenades can be used but the strongest are Healing, Thermite, and Tripmine Grenades. The extra healing provided by Healing Grenades makes them worth taking over more offensive grenades in certain situations.
