Mercurial Overreach made a lot of buzz when it first dropped for two reasons. One was that it is an absolute stat monster, beating out most other Adaptive Frames. And the other was due to a bug, where the red dot within the scope was so small, it practically didn’t exist.
However, once that was patched, Mercurial shot up in usage, and today, I’ll show you why this is such a cracked PvP sniper and a fitting reward for Destiny 2’s Competitive Ranks system.

How to get Mercurial Overreach
Like Rose, Mercurial Overreach is currently only available from Lord Shaxx through the Competitive Playlist. As of Season 23, each player is allowed a certain number of focuses throughout the week based on their current Competitive Division- the higher the division, the more focuses you can get, up to a maximum of seven.
Unlike other focusing, you do not need to have acquired the weapon previously for it to be unlocked; as soon as you are placed in a Division, you are free to focus. Be warned, as each focus takes three engrams and 25,000 Glimmer, so be prepared to stock up before heading in.

How good is Mercurial Overreach
Mercurial Overreach is quite literally the best Adaptive Frame (90 RPM) sniper in the game for PvP, and second best overall, behind Cloudstrike. Mercurial, stat for stat, beats every other sniper in its frame, save for things like Aim Assist or Zoom, which most players won’t notice much, if at all. Its scope is very clean and the center dot is the perfect size, much like Eye of Sol’s. Overall, it’s a fantastic sniper that only gets better with perks.
In PvE, you could do better. The only damage perk Mercurial has is Vorpal Weapon, which wouldn’t be too awful if it also didn’t lack any sort of reload perk. Fine for lower-end content, but I would highly advise against bringing this into PvE when far superior, and craftable, options exist.
We rate Mercurial Overreach S-tier for PvP and D-tier for PvE.

Best Mercurial Overreach Rolls for PvE and PvP
Mercurial Overreach PvP god roll
- Barrel: Fluted Barrel
- Magazine: Ricochet Rounds
- Perk 1: Snapshot Sights or Firmly Planted
- Perk 2: Opening Shot or Moving Target
- Masterwork: Stability
Mercurial may be a stat monster, but naturally, there are some stats we want to push for more than others. For snipers, it’s all about stability and handling. Stability affects your flinch, while handling allows you to be more mobile when strafing. To that end, we will be going for Fluted Barrel and Ricochet Rounds. These combined raise both stats by 15, and give a nice little +5 bonus to range.
For the perks, there are very few I wouldn’t recommend. However, most will gravitate towards the most sought-after roll: Snapshot Sights and Opening Shot. This roll is particularly good at peeking or quick shots, but if you want to take advantage of the higher handling, you could forgo Opening Shot for Moving Target. Honestly, most rolls will do you well, so long as Slickdraw isn’t there.
Mercurial Overreach PvE god roll
- Barrel: Chambered Compensator
- Magazine: Appended Mag
- Perk 1: Firmly Planted
- Perk 2: Vorpal Weapon
- Masterwork: Range
There isn’t much to say here. Other snipers, including other Adaptive frames, have far better PvE rolls than Mercurial. If Mercurial had something like Triple Tap or Overflow, it could have been an excellent mid-game to lower-end-game sniper, but alas, this is not the case. I would not recommend keeping one around for PvE, but if you do, here is what you would want on it:
Mercurial Overreach: Is it worth farming?
If you’re a PvP player who loves sniping or wants to get into it, Mercurial is the one for you. Excellent stats, excellent PvP perk pool. The only thing holding it back is how it’s acquired, but thanks to focusing, you will have far more chances each week to get your god roll than before. Just be ready to cough up the engrams and Glimmer needed.
