Destiny 2 Khvostov 7G-0X Exotic: It’s Coming Back

by | Nov 20, 2023

The introduction of old Destiny 1 exotics into Destiny 2 is always nostalgic, but none can compare to that of Khvostov 7G. Being the first weapon every Guardian acquires in both games, this auto rifle has a special place in the hearts of many players.

Recently, Bungie mentioned the reintroduction of the exotic version of this weapon, slated for The Final Shape, in a showcase livestream. From rumored information and theories to confirmed details, this article will cover everything there is to know about Khvostov 7G-0X’s return.

Khvostov 7G: From Trash to Treasure

As mentioned earlier, Khvostov 7G-02 is the common auto rifle every Guardian receives as their first weapon in both Destiny 1 and 2. Because its purpose is simply to be a tutorial weapon—and its common rarity—there isn’t too much memorable from this version of the rifle.

However, with Destiny 1’s Rise of Iron DLC, a new version of Khvostov was released: Khvostov 7G-0X. This exotic variant of the weapon was obtained from a short quest and mission that placed the player where they were first revived by Ghost at the beginning of the game.

The weapon itself was a bit of a mixed bag. Instead of having a unique trait as all other exotics do, Khvostov 7G-0X featured an absurd amount of perks and modifications. With a total of 108 unique perk combinations you could choose from, the weapon was the definition of a jack of all trades.

Khvostov’s Return

In the 2023 Destiny 2 Showcase Livestream, Bungie confirmed that the exotic variant of Khvostov, along with other fan favorites like Red Death and Dragon’s Breath, would make a return with The Final Shape.

Details other than this are currently unknown, although we’re bound to know more as additional trailers, news articles, and interviews become available. This lack of knowledge has only fueled community speculation on the topic, encouraging players to take guesses on how Bungie will go about reintroducing the weapon.

Community Speculation

While we know little to none about how Khvostov 7G-0X will return, we can make some educated guesses on what Bungie will do to upgrade this weapon to Destiny 2 standards.

To begin, the exotic version of Khvostov will likely be craftable, since its main gimmick was its diverse perk combinations. While this would make it harder to swap between perks on the fly, it only makes sense to utilize the weapon crafting system here.

As for individual perks, all of the ones from the Destiny 1 version of the gun are likely to return. While the sights and firing modes would be unique to Khvostov specifically, all other traits are already featured on weapons in Destiny 2. We’re also likely to see some stronger perks added to the gun to boost it up to the correct level of potency; these could include other stat-influencing traits like Elemental Capacitor or Encore, or even damage perks like Rampage and Kill Clip.

Lastly, we think there’s a good chance that Khvostov will finally receive a true exotic perk. While it’s likely that the weapon’s main draw will continue to be its large amount of customization, it’ll simply be too hard for Khvostov to compete in today’s sandbox without a unique trait.

Would it be worth farming Khvostov 7G-0X?

If Khvostov does become craftable, you’ll need to put in a little work to experience the full power of the weapon. Would this time and effort be worth it?

We think so. While it’ll be hard for Khvostov to stir the pot, exotic primary weapons have become considerably more desirable over the past year. This intrinsic power will automatically make Khvostov better than most of its Legendary-rarity competition, making it more than likely worth the potential grind.
