Essence of the Oversoul is perhaps the most sought-after currency in Destiny 2 right now. After all, it is the main requirement to obtain Crota’s End Exotic weapon: The Necrochasm Exotic auto rifle.
But farming these essences was so slow and painful that the community quickly took to Twitter and Reddit to complain. And it seems that Bungie agreed, as they reacted extremely fast. As confirmed on its latest TWID post, Bungie is changing the way Essence of the Oversoul is farmed when Update 7.2.0.4 arrives on September 19, 2023.
What is Essence of the Oversoul
Essences of the Oversoul are items that can randomly drop when completing encounters within the Crota’s End raid. As part of the Bottomless Pit Quest, Essence of the Oversoul is needed to acquire both the Necrochasm Exotic and its Catalyst.

How to get Essence of the Oversoul (as of Update 7.2.0.4)
Up until now, Essence of the Oversoul items would only drop randomly when clearing a Crota’s End encounter. Drop rates were extremely low, which prompted the community to voice their frustration. With Update 7.2.0.4, drop rates will be significantly increased across the board. As explained by Bungie:
For starters, your first full clear of Crota’s End each week will now provide two guaranteed Essences of the Oversoul: the guaranteed weekly drop from defeating Crota and an additional guaranteed drop for beating each encounter in order from start to finish.
Then, every time you do a full clear, you’ll still earn that additional guaranteed Essence, so there’s now a way to farm them. We are also increasing the drop rate of random Essence of the Oversoul for repeated clears of each encounter, so you can earn even more per try.
Finally, we are adding a chance to strike it lucky and earn all of the Essence necessary to complete both the Necrochasm quest and the catalyst when taking Crota down during a full run. Just like getting the Exotic to drop in previous raids, you can now get the whole deal if fortune smiles.

With these changes, the drop rate of Essences of the Oversoul will be vastly higher than before. A full clear of the raid will guarantee you at least one drop, each encounter will have a random chance to drop another one, and more importantly, a full clear could randomly reward you with all the Essences needed to acquire both the weapon and catalyst at once.

Many hypotheses were discussed these past two weeks, but no clear farming method has been found. With these changes, no farming method will be required, as you only have one reliable method to farm these: Clear the entire raid for a guaranteed drop.

Because of their complete reliance on RNG, Raid Exotics can easily become a frustrating experience for players. We all have a clanmate that doesn’t have the Raid Exotic yet, in spite of clearing that Raid 60+ times…. It is great to see Bungie spice things up and offer a dedicated Exotic quest that doesn’t rely on blind luck and rewards those who actually tackle the raid every week.
