Destiny 2 Expansions in Order: Release Dates, Content & more

by | Feb 17, 2024

While Seasons are what keep Destiny 2 alive throughout the year, Expansions get most of the attention. And rightfully so.

Seasons are responsible for most of the new gear and activities that keep us returning for more, yet Expansions are responsible for the new locations and campaigns, brand-new raids, and play an important role in the game’s roadmap and future.

Destiny 2 DLC Expansions in order

A total of 8 distinct Destiny 2 Expansions have been released so far. This list covers all 8 Expansions in detail, including their start and end dates, Power level caps, and endgame content.

New Destiny 2 Expansion: Lightfall

The current Destiny 2 Expansion is Lightfall. Compared to the critically acclaimed The Witch Queen Expansion, Lightfall has been heavily criticized, especially its campaign and story beats. Having said that, most of its seasons have been good, especially the current Season of the Wish (S23).

We cover in detail everything planned for this Expansion in our Destiny 2 Calendar guide.

Next Destiny 2 Expansion: The Final Shape

The next expansion will be The Final Shape. The Final Shape is also meant to be the final chapter in the Light and Dark saga. We already know that The Final Shape will replace Destiny 2’s Seasons with Episodes, but most details surrounding this final Light and Saga DLC are still under wraps.

We will know more about The Final Shape DLC as we get closer to its release on June 4, 2024.

What to Expect from an Expansion

This is everything you can expect from an Expansion in Destiny 2:

  • A new destination
  • A new Campaign, including a Legend difficulty
  • A new activity, like Terminal Overload or Wellspring
  • A brand-new Raid
  • New weapons
  • New armor sets
  • And sometimes, a new Element or Subclass

Plus, Expansions often feature content that is available to both Expansion owners and free-to-play players. For example, most Expansions give everyone access to their new destination, including free-to-play players.

Before you go…

While seasons all cost the same, the same can’t be said about their quality levels. Some were real bangers, while others left a lot to be desired. That said, The Final Shape will be a break-or-make moment for the Destiny franchise, and Bungie has admitted they are doing absolutely everything they can to ensure The Final Shape is at least as good as the best Destiny DLCs to date.

Will they succeed? Only time will tell…
