Destiny 2 The Final Shape: Release Date

2023 was a tumultuous year for Bungie, to say the least. They started the year with a bang, surprising everyone with the reveal of Marathon, their upcoming game, and the release of the first trailer for The Final Shape DLC.

But things quickly soured with the announcement of layoffs and delays for both Marathon and The Final Shape. This is everything we know about The Final Shape today.

The Final Shape Expansion

The Final Shape is the next Destiny 2 expansion, scheduled for June 4, 2024. The Final Shape will be the game’s eighth expansion and final chapter of the Light and Dark saga.

Bungie has confirmed that the game will carry on and that Destiny 2’s Seasons will be replaced with Episodes, but it remains unclear whether the game will continue as Destiny 2, Destiny 3, or something else.

So, when does the Final Shape come out? After a few months of rumored delays, Bungie has confirmed that The Final Shape will be released on June 4, 2024.

According to Bungie:

The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together. We want to honor that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come. 

Among the few surprises revealed during the trailers, these are some of the biggest:

The return of Cayde-6

As confirmed by Bungie:

Actor Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as fan-favorite character Cayde-6 for the Destiny Universe.

Note how Bungie uses the term “Destiny Universe” instead of “The Final Shape.” While this is pure speculation, that choice of wording leads us to believe that Cayde-6 will be part of more than just the Final Shape DLC. Expect Cayde-6 to be involved at least a few of the Seasons that will take occur in 2024.

A trip inside the Traveler

Letting aside the fact that Cayde-6 died years ago during the Forsaken DLC campaign, we can clearly see that the entire trailer is taking place within the Traveler. If you recall, The Witness opened the Traveler and went inside.

Notice how the shape and colors match with the distant triangle that can be seen at the end of the trailer:
