Destiny 2 The Final Shape: Revealed & Release Dates

While everyone expected the next few weeks to be uneventful to give Season of the Deep some breathing room, Bungie surprised the entire gaming scene with the reveal of Marathon, their upcoming game, and the release of a trailer for The Final Shape expansion.

With this new trailer and the reveal of an upcoming Destiny 2, we are finally putting the pieces of what The Final Shape is going to be. This is everything we know so far.

The Final Shape Expansion

The Final Shape is the next Destiny 2 expansion, scheduled for early 2024. The Final Shape will be the game’s eighth expansion and is supposed to be the final chapter of the Light and Dark saga.

Bungie has confirmed that Destiny will continue as a game, but it remains unclear whether the game will carry on as Destiny 2, Destiny 3, or something else:

The Final Shape Destiny Showcase

Mark your calendars, a Destiny Showcase event will take place on August 22, 2023:

During the livestreamed showcase, Bungie developers will reveal the details for The Final Shape and provide a look forward into the future of Destiny 2.

As is now tradition, expect that showcase to provide details about the last Season of the Lightfall era, and properly present what we can expect from The Final Shape DLC. As said by Bungie CEO Pete Parsons:

This is a momentous time for Bungie, as we continue our evolution into a multi-game studio. More than thirty years of passion for creating incredible games has led us here and will push us into the future. We have a tremendous amount of work ahead, including continuing to build our Marathon development team and supporting Destiny for years to come.

Among the few surprises revealed during the teaser trailer, these were the biggest:

The return of Cayde-6

As confirmed by Bungie:

Actor Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as fan-favorite character Cayde-6 for the Destiny Universe.

Note how Bungie uses the term “Destiny Universe” instead of “The Final Shape”. While this is pure speculation, that choice of wording leads us to believe that Cayde-6 will be part of more than just the Final Shape DLC. Expect Cayde-6 to be involved at least a few of the Seasons that will take occur in 2024.

A trip inside the Traveler

Letting aside the fact that Cayde-6 died years ago during the Forsaken DLC campaign, we can clearly see that the entire trailer is taking place within the Traveler. If you recall, The Witness opened the Traveler and went inside.

Notice how the shape and colors match with the distant triangle that can be seen at the end of the trailer:
