A Heavy weapon that once dominated the PvP Meta, Heir Apparent has seen many ups and downs. These days, Heir Apparent is quite lacking. Still, it remains a staple of the Guardian Games event, and you’ll want both the weapon and its catalyst, aka the Competitive Catalyst, before the event is over.

How to get the Heir Apparent Catalyst
The Heir Apparent catalyst can be acquired by completing the “Competitive Catalyst” quest. To do so, you’ll need to complete the following steps:
- Obtain the quest by depositing Medallions (while this step is RNG-bound, it drops quickly enough for most)
- Earn 50 points by obtaining Medallions (higher-tier Medallions are worth more points)
- Complete 3 Contender Cards
- Defeat combatants with Machine Guns to collect Competitive Spirit. Precision final blows grant bonus progress
Once you have obtained the catalyst, you’ll need 500 weapon kills to unlock it. This can be pretty bothersome, but using typical farming methods such as Shuro Chi or the opening section of Grasp of Avarice will speed things along. However, simply using the weapon in day-to-day content will get the catalyst done in a reasonable timeframe.
What does the Competitive Catalyst do
Heir Apparent’s Exotic Catalyst provides an additional Exotic trait: Legion’s Bulwark:

How to get Heir Apparent: Top of Class Quest
Heir Apparent can only be acquired when the Guardian Games event is live, which is only three weeks per year. With Guardian Games just starting next week, we recommend you get the Heir Apparent ASAP.
To get the Heir Apparent Exotic, you need to complete the “Top of Class” quest, which can be acquired from Eva Levante at the Tower. The Top of Class quest only has two steps:
- Earn a Medallion by completing activities with your class item equipped.
- Defeat targets with Machine Guns. Bonus progress is granted for defeating Guardians.

How good is Heir Apparent?
Heir Apparent features the following Exotic traits:
- Heavy Slug Thrower: Spins up this weapon. This weapon can be fired only when fully spun up.
- Armor of the Colossus: While at full health, spinning up this weapon protects you with an Arc shield.
Heir Apparent isn’t too strong at all. Unfortunately, there isn’t much of a reason to run it in PvE compared to any other Exotic or Legendary Machine Gun. While the shield can be fun to use and provide an interesting defense, it is not worth wasting your Exotic slot on.
In PvP, Heir Apparent does see a rise in strength. However, the case remains the same: there are better options in your heavy slot, and you will be burning your exotic slot when it could be better spent using weapons like Outbreak Perfect, Chaperone, or other strong exotics right now. Heir Apparent is D-tier in PvE and C-tier in PvP
