Destiny 2 Breakneck: God Rolls and How to get it

by | Mar 4, 2024

Destiny 2 has had some incredibly iconic legendary weapons in its storied past. The Mountaintop and Recluse come to mind first, but Breakneck is another weapon that was massively popular when it was first released. Well, get ready to farm Gambit, as the weapon is officially back. And spoiler alert: It’s good.

How to get Breakneck

Just as before, Breakneck can be acquired by playing Gambit. However, Bungie spared us from the absolutely grueling Pinnacle quest that had to be completed back in the day (500 Auto Rifle kills, 40 Gambit matches, anyone?). These days, you’ll need to earn Gambit rewards by playing in the Gambit Playlist or by focusing engrams at the Drifter, as long as you have earned the weapon once and have plenty of engrams to spare.

The more you reset your reputation at the Drifter’s, the more perks can roll in Columns 3 and 4, up to a max of 3 in each. Additionally, it’s worth running a Gambit Prosperity mod on your Ghost to increase your chances of having a drop at the end of a match, and playing during double reputation weeks helps the rate at which you reset as well as earn engrams.

How good is Breakneck

Breakneck is back from the dead (sunset), and while it doesn’t feature that Rampage/Onslaught that made it infamous at the time, it has plenty of excellent perks that more than make up for it. Auto rifles have certain weaknesses, especially in PvP when facing peak and shoot opponents. However, autos are generally fun to use and can be excellent in PvE. Breakneck is a good example of what an excellent auto rifle can do in PvE.

Expect Breakneck to excel in low to mid-level PvE. Onslaught, coupled with either Subsistence or Keep Away, will make for a top-tier ad-clearing weapon. Breakneck can be viable in the Crucible, but better options exist.

Best alternatives:

Breakneck God Rolls and Perk Pool

The Breakneck auto rifle can roll with the following perks:

  • Perk 1: Subsistence, Dynamic Sway Reduction, Hip-Fire Grip, Keep Away, Heating Up, Shoot to Loot, Pugilist, Feeding Frenzy, Encore, Enlightened Action, Eye of the Storm, Under Pressure
  • Perk 2: Onslaught, Deconstruct, Attrition Orbs, Kinetic Tremors, Demolitionist, Offhand Strike, Tap the Trigger, Osmosis, Moving Target, Adagio, Harmony
  • Origin Trait: Gun and Run

Breakneck PvE god roll

  • Barrel: Arrowhead Break (also good: Corkscrew Rifling)
  • Magazine: Ricochet Rounds
  • Perk 1: Subsistence (also good: Enlightened Action)
  • Perk 2: Onslaught (also good: Kinetic Tremors)
  • Masterwork: Range

Barrels and Magazines are not as crucial for PvE as they can be for PvP, but you’ll still want anything that can improve your Handling and Stability. This will make switching and staying on targets easier.

What you absolutely want is the Subsistence + Onslaught combo. While not as impressive on paper as the OG Rampage + Onslaught combination from the original Breakneck, Subsistence is a great replacement, allowing you to slay without needing to reload as much. This in turn will allow your Onslaught perk to have the highest possible uptime.  If you plan to tackle higher-level content, Enlightened Action might be a better option than Subsistence.

Breakneck PvP god roll

  • Barrel: Arrowhead Break (also good: Corkscrew Rifling)
  • Magazine: Ricochet Rounds (also good: Armor Piercing Rounds)
  • Perk 1: Dynamic Sway Reduction (also good: Keep Away)
  • Perk 2: Onslaught (also good: Kinetic Tremors)
  • Masterwork: Range

While I don’t expect Breakneck to rise to the top of the PvP meta, mainly because auto rifles, in general, rarely do, Breakneck can be viable. Keep Away and Onslaught, coupled with as much range and stability as humanly possible, should allow you to hold your ground in the Crucible.

@rat Amen and second that notion. Go ahead and add the Gambit Pulse rifle from the season as breakneck. Heck the Black Armory Pulse rifles would be fine with me as well. Rewarding the player base that has earned the guns before. Either has them still 🫣 or had them and was forced to break down for a currency soon to be deprecated. Cheers

I want my 21% delerium back, with the EXACT same perks that we had to work forever to get, as well as my original breakneck. it’s completely unfair that newer players are able to get these weapons out of single engrams. Bungie sucks when it comes to veteran player appreciation.
