It’s time to harness your inner baker: The Dawning is here. Whether it be obtaining weapons exclusive to this time of year, adorning your Guardian with new cosmetics, or baking cookies for your favorite vendors, one thing is certain: the holiday season is in full swing, and every player can find a way to celebrate.
Regardless of how you spread cheer, you’ll probably drown in the various currencies related to the event. Today, we’ll cover one in specific: Dawning Essence. We will explain what it is and cover how to get it, where to spend it, and the best ways to farm it. Read on.
What is Dawning Essence?
Dawning Essence is a crucial Dawning ingredient required to bake cookies in Eva’s Holiday Oven 2.1. Dawning Essence can be obtained by completing activities throughout the game.
Where to spend Dawning Essence
Every cookie recipe in Eva’s Holiday Oven requires Dawning Essence. While there’s no way to get around the mandatory cost, there is a way to reduce it.
Masterworking your oven—that is, baking every unique cookie in the game—will reduce the Dawning Essence cost for all recipes to ten. If you’re a returning player who masterworked their oven in previous years, be sure to do that before baking cookies! You can Masterwork it immediately, but it won’t happen automatically.
If you’re new to the Dawning holiday event, cookies are essential, as baking and delivering cookies can reward you with Dawning weapons, such as the Albedo Wing (Dawning armor, unfortunately, can only be purchased in the Eververse).

How to get Dawning Essence in Destiny 2
Obtaining Dawning Essence is incredibly simple: just complete any activity in the game. Nearly everything from public events to story missions to Crucible matches will grant at least a little Dawning Essence.
Generally speaking, the amount of Essence you’ll get from activities corresponds to their length: the longer the activity, the more currency you’ll receive.
Dawning bounties available from Eva Levante also grant Dawning Essence. Only the weekly ones offer the currency at first (30 per bounty, for a total of 180 with three characters), but purchasing the Essential Harvest upgrade from Eva makes all bounties reward it.
How to farm Dawning Essence, Destiny 2

The most efficient way of farming Dawning Essence is through the First Contact mission (the first mission of the Lightfall campaign). Begin by loading the mission up and moving through it until you’re in the hangar right before entering the drop pods. From there:
- If they haven’t already, have at least one other Guardian join your fireteam. Swap to a second character and join your friend in the mission.
- Enter the drop pods, which will complete the mission and reward Dawning Essence.
- Swap back to your first character and re-load your First Contact mission checkpoint.
- Repeat steps 1-3.
This was the go-to method of obtaining Spectral Pages during Festival of the Lost, but quickly got patched out of the game. The same will probably happen here, so act fast!

If the method above has been patched—or if you simply don’t want to go through all that work—heroic public events on large destinations like the EDZ are your next best bet. However, keep in mind that nearly all activities in Destiny 2 grant Dawning Essence, meaning the easiest way to farm is to just passively play the game.
