Pay attention. This long-forgotten Exotic Fusion rifle is about to make a significant comeback.
Considered average for years now, Merciless received several buffs with the release of Season of the Seraph (S19) on December 6, 2022. These buffs were already known by the community, but now that we’ve got our hands on the weapon, we can confirm the weapon was buffed well beyond expectations.
This guide will cover how powerful Merciless is and tell you how to get it, and equally importantly, how to find its catalyst.

How to get Merciless in 2023
Merciless can be acquired via Exotic engrams or it can be purchased from Xûr (whenever he decides to sell it).
Without a direct method to acquire it, getting this weapon might take longer than other weapons. Having said that, Exotic engrams will always reward you with a weapon or armor you don’t already have. This means that each Exotic engram you open will take you one step closer to getting the Trinity Ghoul.
There are several ways to acquire Exotic engrams in 2022. These are the most reliable methods to find Exotic engrams in Destiny 2:
- The Season Pass
- Xûr (he offers one random Exotic engram per week)
- Nightfall: The Ordeals in higher difficulties
There isn’t much more that can be said about grinding Exotic engrams, only that they have a higher chance to drop from endgame activities.
How good is Merciless in Season 19
With the buffs released with Season of the Seraph, Merciless became an excellent PvE weapon. As covered by Reddit user Zommander_Cabala, the weapon is now a monster in PvE:
The stacks you’ve gained no longer expire on kill, despite what the gun’s still-existing description text tells you, meaning that once you just fire off two volleys you can clear entire rooms, burst down champions, destroy majors, all in the same magazine, reload super fast because it has Feeding Frenzy, then just effortlessly keep mowing people down with an insane:
Plus, the weapon also features a built-in hidden Feeding Frenzy perk, and pre-nerf Kill Clip (+66% damage on reload).

Merciless Exotic Fusion rifle, Destiny 2
Overall, with these buffs, Merciless features:
- A 66% damage boost
- Instantaneous charge time
- Ultra-fast reloading
- 8 Magazine liquefier
If those changes are a bit too technical for you, just know that Merciless just received a major buff that significantly improves its potency and lethality.
Merciless catalyst: Where to find it?
The catalyst for Merciless can be found through:
Kills or completions in Strikes & Nightfalls
As is the case of many other catalysts, this one is purely RNG-based, which means that finding it will depend on your luck.
How to unlock the catalyst?
Once you have found the catalyst, you will need:
- 500 kills
To unlock the Catalyst, any place with lots of easy-to-kill enemies can be a good spot. The Shuro Chi encounter from the Last With raid is a particularly popular spot to farm catalysts.
Your turn
If you don’t have Merciless already, I suggest you start farming high-level Nightfalls right now. The catalyst will drop soon after.
