Monument of Triumph, Destiny 2’s final update, has arrived. The bittersweet conclusion to the game, which has been a home for so many for almost a decade, has arrived as one of the greatest updates the game has ever seen, including one of the best exotic missions the game has ever seen.
In fact, Oblation: Bloodline is a hidden Easter egg of sorts, channeling the energy of the likes of Zero Hour and The Whisper to be found in a puzzle within a strike. And there are even secrets within the mission that are worth your time to simply experience, even if you’re not interested in Cull’s Shadow.
This guide will teach you how to unlock Cull’s Shadow by making your way through the Oblation: Bloodline exotic mission. So, get your favorite Weapon of Sorrow, head to The Scarlet Keep, and get ready to jump into a mission you won’t want to miss.
We cover Cull’s Shadow’s Catalysts here.
How to Unlock Oblation: Bloodline
Most importantly, to unlock Oblation: Bloodline you’ll need to have a Weapon of Sorrow (Thorn, Necrochasm, Osteo Striga, or Touch of Malice) equipped (and held when doing steps). Without one you’ll be unable to see the symbols to shoot, meaning you won’t be able to progress. This is only for the unlock step, however.
Oblation Bloodline is a ‘hidden’ easter egg style quest to unlock. This means that your journey to obtain Cull’s Shadow doesn’t begin in the Portal, but instead begins in The Scarlet Keep Strike. Launch the strike on any difficulty, and make your way to the end.
When you get to the final boss fight, you’ll see a gate with three symbols. Around the room there will be symbols to shoot; you’ll need to shoot the correct ones from top to bottom, which will open the gate for you to be able to go through.
Take a sharp right when you head through, and you’ll find a room with a green taken crystal inside of it. Interact with it and go through the dialogue.
Once you’ve completed this, head to the Moon patrol zone. You’ll need to go around the moon to four different locations and locate four Syndicate corpses; each one will lead to another door puzzle with a crystal. The area with the corpses in it will be marked on your map, and you’ll have ‘Near Objective’ on your HUD once you arrive.
Once interacted with, you’ll hear a voice line that will tell you where you need to go for that specific crystal.
The locations are as follows:
- Archer’s Line: Shrine of Oryx
- Anchor of Light: Temple of Crota
- Hellmouth: Chamber of Night
- Sorrow’s Harbor: K1 Revelation
However, you can also follow the path of green bodies, which will help indicate where on the moon you’ll need to go.
You’ll approach a door with Hive runes on it. Shoot the correct symbols around the room to be able to open the door.
Once you’ve interacted with all four of these, head to this part of Sorrow’s Harbor (it’ll be on your map as well; under the stairs).
Inside of this small hole, below the staircase and bridge near Altars of Sorrow, will be the interact to begin Oblation Bloodline.
Oblation: Bloodline Exotic Mission Guide
When you enter Oblation: Bloodline, the first thing you’ll need to do is speak to Aunor. Once you’ve done so, head forward and down the traversal towards the red tower.
Once you get towards it, jump down towards this area; you’ll see a few ads as well as the orange glow and mechanical sparkle that contrasts the rest of the area.
Clear the ads in this area, and then interact with the console in the middle.
Once done, three fuses will open behind the switch. Shoot all three to activate the two huge pillars in the middle of the platform.
You’ll need to shoot the glowing vents on the pillar to destroy it; once all of them have been shot, that pillar will have been destroyed. Then, there will be a cannon to jump into.
Jump into it, and you’ll get launched to the next section, where you once again have to follow the same process.
There are three fuses, one in the middle, and then two to the sides. Shoot those three fuses and then continue to destroy the pillars in the middle as you did the first.
Once you’ve destroyed the pillars, you’ll be able to continue forward into the room with the glass window. Kill the ads in there and activate the final button to destroy the laser and activate another cannon to jump into.
Jump through to head to the next part of the mission, which will be a lengthy jumping puzzle through the depths of the Moon.
The most important part of this jumping puzzle is that you’re trying to head as high as possible, and so generally speaking you’ll want to look towards ledges upwards with light and/or ads to signal your way forward. There are a few small dead ends, but these are generally small rooms for lore-book steps (for once you’ve done the whole quest) and are easy to back out of if you do take a wrong turn.
The second part of this traversal requires you to traverse up a room. The same thing applies here: jump to the huge ‘lanterns’ in the middle of the room, making sure to keep an eye out for both the lanterns and for ads to help you work out where to jump to next.
At the top of this room, once you’ve jumped up, there will be a tunnel with gated iron bars. You’ll want to jump onto the roof and down to the other side; where there’ll be a platform for you to jump down onto to enter the tunnel. Turn left once you do so, and stop at the staircase.
You’ll see a shadow of Bael inside of a room in front of you. Ignore it. There’ll be a little hole for you to enter in the staircase. Enter inside of here, and continue traversing forward as you’ve done before, following the ads to be able to guide you down.
Jump down into the huge hall with a gate of Soulfire blocking your way. This will teach you the main mechanic of the final encounter of this mission.
Clear the wizards, and then you’ll see a Soulfire Vessel yellow bar that doesn’t die to your normal guns. You’ll need to melee this vessel to get a Soulfire Charge buff.
Once done, instantly run to one of the cauldrons in the middle of the room and dunk your buff to light it. This will trigger the room on the right to open, in which you’ll need to complete the same process.
Kill the ads, kill the yellow-bar, get the buff, and dunk it into a cauldron. Once you’ve done this, there will be a room on the left, but it’ll be up above.
There’s a small staircase of rocks to follow upwards. Do so, and you’ll be able to do the final room in this area. Follow the same steps, and the soulfire will clear and you’ll be able to advance through.
Valus Tau’Rig, The Insatiable
When you enter the next room, you’ll be able to take the Weapon of Sorrow from the room… Or, more accurately, one of Bael’s commanders will drop in and steal it before you have the chance. Here, you’ll need to take out Valus Tau’Rig to be able to get your hands on Cull’s Shadow.
First and foremost, deal as much damage as possible to Tau’Rig, to get his first phase down. This easy step will unlock the second phase of the encounter, which is going to be very similar to the encounter beforehand.
When the second phase starts, the Valus will create three wizards, who will then disappear briefly. When they reappear, you’ll need to follow them and clear the room they go to, in which you’ll kill a Soulfire Vessel once again.
Once you’ve done so, run back out to a cauldron in the main room, and DPS him. Any DPS strategy works here, it’s not incredibly difficult as long as you have some form of survivability to deal with the ads in the room.
Once this DPS phase is done, you’ll have to do the same again one more time to kill the boss. After which, you’ll be able to claim the Cull’s Shadow.
And, the mission is done! If you turn around, you’ll see an interactable that says ‘End Mission’. But… if you continue back into the room before the boss, clear the ads, and jump back up to the area you jumped up to in the pre-boss encounter, you’ll see a set of lanterns that have appeared above the door to the boss.
Jump across them, and interact with the grimoire that says ‘Indulge Cull’s Shadow’. Then, head back to the boss room.
You’ll see a door with Hive runes, like you had to clear to unlock the mission. Shoot the runes in the right order around the room, and you’ll unlock Oblation: Soulfed; the second Oblation Exotic Mission.
