Cull’s Shadow is a kinetic Fusion Rifle that is designed to have a play pattern similar to a Glaive, in which you go between utilizing melee and normal weapon fire.
We cover how to complete the Oblation: Bloodline Exotic mission here.
It has the following perks:
- Soulforge: Targets afflicted by corruption from Soulfire Charges coalesce into soulfire crystals when defeated. Crystals detonate in a damaging radius when destroyed.
- Soulburn: Final blows or rapid hits with this weapon’s frontal blades heal you and provide soulfire charges, which cause rounds fired by this weapon to inflict potent corruption. These frontal blades deal increased damage to targets afflicted by corruption.
Is Cull’s Shadow Good?
First and foremost, it’s really fun to use. And, in most non-endgame content, it’ll do you just fine if you enjoy it. The catalysts do add some configurability to the weapon, in that they give extra survivability and damage/damage-over-time.
With that being said, at an initial glance, Cull’s Shadow doesn’t have much going for it at a higher-level when compared to even the better legendary Glaives. For a similar play-pattern, Glaives can drop perks with far more sustain and utility while also having great defensive capabilities, whereas Cull’s Shadow falls in between with no strong draw towards it.
In PvP, it seems as though this doesn’t really have a spot in the sandbox, in which it’s definitely outdone by shotguns in close range, and is restricted by the ammo economy making it difficult to warrant over other choices.
All in all, it’s definitely fun to use and cool, and can do some work on ads meaning that if you like it, it might be usable, but might just be too much work for not enough payoff for a special ammo exotic when push comes to shove.
Cull’s Shadow is B-tier in PvE and C-tier in PvP.
How to get Cull’s Shadow’s Catalysts
Cull’s Shadow drops with four catalysts that all interact with soulfire crystal creation and detonation, and encourage utilizing melee in some way, shape, or form:
- Soulfire Succor: Destroying soulfire crystals with this weapon’s frontal blades provides Soulfire Charges and partially reloads the magazine from reserves.
- Soulfire Rancor: Soulfire crystals expel potent corruption when destroyed and automatically detonate when a target is within close proximity.
- Soulfire Zeal: Nearby soulfire crystal detonations increase your damage resistance and movement speed while this weapon is equipped.
- Soulfire Skewer: Nearby soulfire crystal detonations cause this weapon’s frontal blades to inflict corruption.
To unlock Cull’s Shadow’s catalysts, you’ll have to play through Oblation: Soulfed and its third mission, Oblation: Immolation. You don’t need to play through all of these in one go, as it appears that simply unlocking this through the steps above is enough to unlock it through the director.
- Soulfire Succor: To unlock this catalyst, you simply need to follow the steps to unlock Oblation: Soulfed. You’ll obtain it once the tome has been interacted with.
- Soulfire Rancor: This is obtainable within Oblation: Soulfed, by defeating the bosses.
- Soulfire Zeal: Unlocking Oblation: Immolation at the end of Soulfed will reward you with this catalyst.
- Soulfire Skewer: The final catalyst drops at the end of the third mission.
