The long-awaited crossbow is finally here. Opaque Hourglass, dropping from the Desert Perpetual raid, is the first of its kind in Destiny 2. Unlike the Destiny: Rising version, it’s a heavy hitter that’s meant more for knocking down beefier targets than sustained DPS. This guide will cover all you need to know about it.

How good is Opaque Hourglass
Our very first actual crossbow (sorry, Buried Bloodline), Opaque Hourglass is arguably the most unique weapon we’ve ever seen, though that doesn’t necessarily make it good. The ability to retrieve bolts is nice as it theoretically gives you infinite ammo and does damage with each pull, but with how close you need to get, it will never be a DPS weapon.
Instead, one should use this in higher difficulty content to help with mini-bosses and the like. The array of bolt options opens up a few different playstyles as well, such as Charged Bolts dealing damage over time or Explosive Bolts to clear waves. Meta? Unlikely, but it is a lot of fun. Opaque Hourglass is B-Tier for PvE and D-tier for PvP.

Opaque Hourglass PvE god rolls
| PvE Roll: All-Around | |
|---|---|
| Barrel | Empowered Rail |
| Magazine | Charged Bolts |
| Perk 1 | Impulse Amplifier or Bolt Collector (also good: Field Prep) |
| Perk 2 | Frenzy or Elemental Honing (also good: Master of Arms) |
| Masterwork | Persistence |
As stated earlier, DPS is not this weapon’s strong suit, so we’ll go for Empowered Rail to up the Persistence stat. This stat governs how long bolts stay up before expiring, so having it as high as possible allows you more time to retrieve it. This is perfect as Charged Bolts deal damage over time while in a target, so the longer it is up, the better.
For Perk 1, Impulse Amplifier or Bolt Collector are good general picks. Impulse will let you hit farther away more reliably, and Bolt Collector lets you use the crossbow in a more CQC setting. Perk 2 will be either Frenzy or Master of Arms for their easy and powerful damage buffs, which will also affect Charged Bolts’ damage as well. And if you want to try a DPS roll, Field Prep and Elemental Honing can make for a good swap build.

How to get Opaque Hourglass
Opaque Hourglass is one of six weapons available from The Desert Perpetual raid. It drops from the Epoptes (Hydra boss) and Koregos (Final Boss) encounters. You can easily farm these encounters, as The Desert Perpetual allows you to choose your encounters in any order, so simply choose the Wyvern and then the final boss, and repeat!
Additional copies of the weapon can be purchased at the end-of-raid vendor for Spoils of Conquest, and higher-tier variants can be obtained on runs with Feats active. We cover the entire Desert Perpetual Loot Table here.
