Dual Destiny Guide: How to get Exotic Class Items

by | Sep 1, 2024

The Final Shape has a lot of great loot to offer, but the new Exotic Class Items may be the most sought-after. which can only be unlocked through the Dual Destiny Exotic mission!

Today we cover exactly how to unlock and complete the Dual Destiny mission to obtain your first Exotic Class Items. Let’s begin.

How to Unlock the Dual Destiny Mission

This mission forces you to be in a fireteam of two (going in solo or as a trio will not work), and it’s the only way to obtain your first class item.

Once you find one, head to The Landing in the Pale Heart and complete the Overthrow (including the final boss). Slightly after the boss dies, you should see a prompt in chat that reads “A Secret-Keeper of the Witch Queen is near.” Head to the location shown below (a small cave on the far right side of the zone), then kill the Lightbearer Wizard that spawns. If that text doesn’t appear, you likely need to progress either The Final Shape campaign or the introduction to Episode: Echoes further.

Now, you must do this for the other two zones as well. After defeating the Overthrow boss in The Blooming, a Lightbearer Hive will spawn at the top right of the map, marked with our cursor below (this one is the hardest to find—an Overthrow event spawns there sometimes and it can be accessed by a large opening to the left of the entrance to The Seclusion).

Finally, move to The Impasse and complete the Overthrow there. Once again, head to the location marked below, and kill the Lucent Hive that spawns.

After you’ve defeated all three Secret-Keepers, head back to The Landing. In the sky, you should see a large yellow beam directing you toward The Refraction. Follow it to this loading zone, where you’ll keep moving forward until you reach the large statue of Savathun.

After arriving at the statue, you’ll notice two new objective markers on your screen, as well as a seven-minute buff entitled Savathun’s Envoy. Both of these markers lead to pyramid spikes that will spawn groups of Dread followed by a Subjugator. Damage the Subjugators until they teleport away and return the relic balls they drop to the Savathun statue. Dunking both before your buff expires should unlock the mission.

Dual Destiny Mission Guide

As we mentioned earlier, you’ll need a teammate to launch this mission, so find one first. Additionally, you’ll need one player on a Light subclass and the other on a Darkness one. These are locked during the mission, and a Prismatic subclass fills both requirements. Once you’re ready to go, launch the mission from the Pale Heart’s destination screen (the physical flag next to Savathun’s statue seems to be bugged).

NOTE: While this mission does have a timer attached to it and contains mechanics that require communication between teammates, it is best experienced blindly. Only continue reading if you’re stuck on a certain section or if you seriously don’t care about spoilers.

Upon loading into the mission, you and your teammate should notice a buff on the left side of your screen—one player will have Darkness Aligned, while the other will have Light Aligned (based on your equipped subclass). These buffs stick around (and don’t change) throughout the entire mission. To unlock the first barrier, have the Light Aligned player stand on the light plate and the Darkness Aligned player stand on the dark one.

Continue through the open areas until you enter a new cave with another barrier. The Light plate will be around the corner to the right of the first barrier you come across, while the Darkness one will be off to the left a bit, close to a second barrier blocking the same cave.

After the barrier is removed, continue through the area until you come across a rally banner location and the first “encounter” of the mission.

In this encounter, you’ll need to defeat Darkness or Light-imbued enemies (depending on your alignment) to pick up motes. Each mote you pick up allows you to see a greater number of symbols around the room, which you’ll need to communicate with your teammate about.

One player will be able to see symbols above “chests” (in the first room, it will be the Light Aligned player), while the other will see symbols above floating pyramid spikes that can be shot. Have the chest player call out the symbols they see from left to right (you’ll need to pick up multiple motes to see all of them). The other player must then shoot those symbols out of the air in order.

If done correctly, you’ll get teleported to a new room in which you’ll do the same thing. However, roles will be reversed, and there will now be three chests instead of two. Continue this through a total of three rooms to complete the encounter.

After this encounter, you’ll begin a short and relatively straightforward jumping puzzle. At some point, you’ll once again encounter Light and Darkness plates, which function identically to the ones previously: step on both simultaneously to unlock a way forward.

Encounter two features a large Pyramid structure in the center of the arena with rays of light jetting out from it. Both you and your teammate will see six rays, however they’ll be directed toward different darkness nodes. You’ll need to communicate with your teammate regarding which rays are active, then shoot the three nodes that both players see rays from (to shoot the nodes, you’ll need to kill the Tormentor that spawns. Whoever gets the final blow should receive a buff to shoot them).

Dual Destiny Guide screen 9 Destiny 2

The easiest way we’ve found to do this is to call out which nodes aren’t active for each player. That should create a combined total of six, which means the remaining three nodes are the ones you need to shoot. Repeat this process until the encounter finishes.

After making your way through another short jumping section, you’ll come to the final boss arena. Deal damage to the Subjugator that spawns (Microcosm is great here!) until it goes immune. At this point, you’ll need to repeat the same mechanics as you did for the first encounter: defeat a Darkness or Light-imbued enemy, have one person call out the three symbols they see, then have the other shoot those symbols out of the air. In this encounter, the symbols that need to be read appear above the boss as opposed to above chests.

Continue damage, then repeat the same mechanic for the second boss. After both bosses go immune, you and your teammate will each go to a separate side of the arena, where you’ll kill another Darkness or Light-imbued enemy and repeat the second encounter’s mechanics. Each of you will see four rays jetting out from the center, with one of them being common between you. You’ll both need to shoot the common node but will need to do so extremely quickly, as the rays continuously swap.

After doing so three times, the bosses will become damageable and all you need to do is finish them off. There is one more surprise at the end of the mission, but we’ll leave it for you to discover.

All we’ll say is that what you choose doesn’t affect the loot you or your teammate receive—you both will end up with a randomly rolled exotic class item by the end.

How to farm Dual Destiny

After obtaining the first copy from Dual Destiny, additional exotic class items can be farmed in various ways. If you enjoy the Dual Destiny mission (and have a friend to farm with), replaying the activity will grant another class item each run. Additionally, a weekly challenge (viewable from the Pale Heart map) will grant an additional class item once per week, giving you two for your first run each reset.

Comment *crap gatekeeping content that destiny’s final shape marketing lied and said would be broadly available but is instead designed only for Pros and streamers

This isn’t gatekeeping. It’s a co-op mission that requires communication. There’s plenty of Guardians who are not pros or streamers that have beaten this.

BS. It’s all well and good for you if you have people you know who can help out, the other 99% of us who can’t find people with mic’s and the basic, simple fact that there is NO WAY AT ALL to either LFG or fireteam find for this garbage mission says you’re completely and utterly ignorant of what most of us are having to deal with here. IT IS BEING GATEKEPT 100%. If it wasn’t I’d be able to either solo it or find it in LFG or FireTeam Finder. The fact that I can do none of these things says that you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Keep your ignorant opinions to yourself, they’re neither helpful nor wanted.

“You’ll need a team mate” without explaining how in the fk anyone can find a team mate because Bungie doesn’t provide any fkn way to create a group to do this mission. “Yeah, just find a team mate” as if that’s so easy to do for most players. Are you people morons?
