Diablo 4: Avarice Spawn Times and Rewards and Tracker

by | Oct 5, 2023

Diablo 4’s World Bosses represent the pinnacle of open-world enemies inside the Sanctuary. They are big, powerful, and dangerous and only appear for short periods of time, making them a challenge to tackle, even for the most daring.

Avarice is no exception to this; his teleportation and variety of attacks make him truly a threat to players bold enough to go against him. It is highly recommended to only challenge them with a large number of players or a well-built character if you hope to beat them within the 15-minute window and snag yourself some great loot.

Avarice Spawn Times & Timer

The world bosses in Diablo IV have uniform spawns and a set rotation. This means they spawn simultaneously for everyone at set intervals throughout the day. This makes it a lot easier to prepare as you will know when the next boss will arrive. The best way to keep track of when they appear is to use a website/account that sends an alert beforehand, giving you enough time to prepare. We cover them here.

An in-game marker* will also appear on the map 30 minutes before the boss, giving you plenty of time to gather your elixirs, check your gear, and ride over to the boss arena.

*Note: This icon will only appear after you have beaten the campaign. You will still be able to fight the bosses without beating the campaign, but the ingame marker will not appear, forcing you to use another source/piggyback off a friend to find it.

Avarice Horse Armor and Rewards

Like all other world bosses, Avarice will drop a Legendary Cache once a week when you first defeat him. This cache contains various items from uniques, legendaries, rares, and some materials, including Scattered Prisms. Avarice himself will also drop items when he dies. These can also be Uniques and legendaries.

There are no specific or weighted drops when it comes to these items, which means all character-specific legendaries can drop, so it is not recommended to use boss loot as a target farm method. These items will scale depending on your level and world tier (ancestral items on WT4 etc.). The amount of XP obtained for defeating Avarice also scales based on the world tier, with WT4 offering the most XP.

Avarice also has a unique chest that he carries around, which, when defeated, falls onto the ground next to his corpse. This stash can then be broken open to reveal large amounts of gold and gems that Avarice was hoarding inside.

Avarice’s Horse armor

Just like Ashava, Avarice can also drop an exclusive armor ornament for your mount. This eye-catching ornament is covered in gold, riches, and weapons – a perfectly fitting ornament for Avarice. Shown below is the ornament combined with the Ashava beta trophy and the Spectral Charger horse obtained from Legion Events.

Avarice Location: Where does Avarice spawn

World bosses have five spawn zones, one in each area, that they will randomly spawn at when the time is right. The five locations spawn locations are shown on the map below. These are:

  • Saraan Caldera, Dry Steppes

  • Caen Adar, Scosglen
  • Fields of Desecration, Hawezar

Diablo 4 Avarice Strategy

As expected of a world boss, Avarice has a wide variety of attacks that it will use throughout the fight. These attacks can vary between being low-threat attacks to potential 1 hits. He also has some combinations of his own, which need to be avoided at all costs.

Avarice Attacks
Attack Danger Level
Portal Attack High
Chest Swing High
Mallet Slam High
Mallet Thrust High
Mallet Cleave Minor
Gold Vomit Minor
Ground Stomp Minor
Golden Pillars Minor (used for combos)

Portal Attack

Perhaps the most iconic attack that Avarice can perform, the portal hopping charge, can deal enormous damage to unsuspecting players. Avarice first summons a golden portal into which he charges, only to reappear a short time later from another golden portal at a different location. He will then charge a short distance out back into the fight. Thankfully, these portals have a wind-up time before Avarice can enter/exit from them. As long as you save a dash or defensive ability for his exit, this attack can be easily avoided.

Chest Swing

Avarice likes to throw his wealth around, quite literally, with the Chest Swing attack. As the name implies, Avarice uses his large chest attached to the end of his chain to swing around in a large area. Getting hit by the spinning chest is a death sentence for most characters. The chest is the only thing you have to dodge to survive – making the best place to stand is between Avarice and his chest. Again, this attack has a small spin-up animation giving you time to position yourself correctly to avoid damage.

Mallet Slam

Avarice’s main weapon of choice is his large mallet which he uses for 3 of his attacks. The first and arguably most dangerous attack is his Mallet Slam. Avarice raises his mallet before slamming it down, creating a large creator and dealing massive damage. Any character underneath his mallet is almost guaranteed to be dead. This attack can be avoided by correctly timing your dash away or saving a defensive ability to try and tank the damage. Mallet Slam becomes the most dangerous when he uses it after spawning his Golden Pillars. Mallet Slam starts a chain reaction that will explode all the pillars after a short period of time. Each pillar has a decent AoE and damage which can stack with nearby pillars, resulting in big damage in a wide area. This is definitely the most deadly attack of his arsenal, which makes it a must-avoid at all costs.

Mallet Thrust

The second mallet-based attack that Avarice uses is the Mallet Thrust. Avarice thrust his mallet forward, flinging debris in a cone-shaped area in front of him. (think of Barbarian’s Upheaval skill). Whilst it has a smaller AoE compared to his other attacks, it makes up for the lack of coverage with high damage. However, due to the smaller AoE of the attack, a well-timed dash will mitigate and dodge the attack.

Mallet Cleave

The final attack that uses Avarice’s trusty Mallet is the Cleave attack. It shares some similarities with the Mallet Thrust attack but this time the trade-off is area increase for significantly less damage. Avarice uses his mallet and cleaves a 180° area dealing minor damage to those caught. This attack doesn’t hit very hard and doesn’t pose much of a threat hence most people will just tank this attack/use a potion to out-heal the damage.

Gold Vomit

As the name suggests, this is when Avarice throws up a large puddle of gold around his feet. This puddle covers a decent area and deals minor damage over time. This is another one of his attacks that doesn’t live up to the threat of some of his other attacks. The damage is so little that most classes with minor healing abilities can just stand within the pool and ignore it. Other classes lacking healing can still stand in the pool but will have to keep an eye on their health to remember to use a potion when necessary.

Ground Stomp

One of the utility-based attacks that Avarice can use, Ground Stomp, is a simple attack. Avarice uses this attack to pull players towards him, bringing them in range of his other attacks. Ground Slam poses little to no threat due to the small amount of damage it does. The main threat is what comes after. It is recommended to save your dash if you get pulled in unwillingly to allow you to escape back to a safer distance.

Golden Pillars

The final ability in Avarice’s arsenal is the ability to some several golden pillars around himself. By themselves, these pillars are harmless. The only annoyance they create is blocking both your movements and attacks, forcing you to reposition. The main threat is when they are detonated by Mallet Slam, as mentioned above. When this combo happens, it is critical to create distance between yourself and the pillars. Standing next to a pillar is a death sentence when the combo is used by Avarice.

General Tips against Avarice

Here are some general tips and tricks to help you defeat Avarice, The Gold Cursed.

  • The simple strategy for beating Avarice is to stay either really close to him or really far away. Being close enough to his feet makes it easier to dodge most of his wind-up attacks whereas being far away reduces the amount of attacks you need to worry about.
  • Always remember to use Elixirs and Essences for the additional stat boosts.
  • Like all other bosses, Avarice has a stagger bar that can be filled by using crowd control abilities on him. It is worth keeping track of this bar (located just below his health bar) as saving your highest damage abilities for when he is staggered is the best way to deal big damage.
  • Avarice also has a segmented health bar (indicated by the red arrows). Every time a segment is lost, the arrow on the health bar will turn grey and Avarice will drop some health potions. He will also get more frustrated and deadly as his health bar lowers.

Class Recommendations

Some classes excel at single-target damage compared to others however, each class can still be built to be a viable boss killer. Remember to use the seasonal hearts like the Barber for big damage increases. Here are our simple recommendations for main skills to build around:

Class Build 1 Ranking Build 2 Ranking
Barbarian Double Swing A Rend B
Druid Tornado S Landslide S
Rogue Twisting Blades S Rapid Fire A
Sorcerer Ice Shards S Chain Lightning A
Necromancer Bone Spear S Minions B
