Diablo 4 is all about the XP. XP is an essential part of the Diablo leveling experience and is something players want to do as efficiently as possible. In fact, the Diablo community is always on the lookout for exploits and loot farms, which Blizzard is quick to patch as soon as they can.
But what is the best XP farm this Season? Well, it depends on your actual level, but we cover the 2 methods that will net you the most experience per hour, whether your character is level 10 or level 90.
XP farm core principles
There are two XP farms that we’ll cover. The leveling XP farm while you’re between levels 1 and 50 and the endgame XP farm from level 50 upwards. Either way, these core principles apply:
- Aim for enemies that are three levels higher than you (more than that is not required)
- Always have a potion active for a bonus +5% experience
- Group up when possible, as being part of a party also rewards bonus experience
These three variables all grant bonus XP.
Best Endgame XP Farm in Diablo 4 (level 50 upwards)
With the release of Patch 1.0.3, Blizzard significantly changed how much XP is rewarded throughout the game. The most notable change was the buff to XP rewarded from Nightmare Dungeons:
- Significantly increased the experience awarded for completing Nightmare Dungeons.
- Significantly increased the experience gained from killing monsters in Nightmare Dungeons.
- Players can now teleport to their Nightmare Dungeon directly through the map.
Needless to say, Nightmare Dungeons are the best sources of XP in Diablo 4. Yet Nightmare Dungeons were not created equal. Some will reward you with vastly more XP per hour than others. These are the most rewarding Nightmare Dungeons in terms of XP/hour as of Season 1:
Dungeon | Class | - | Aspect | Tier | XP per hour | Clear time |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sirocco Caverns | Barbarian | Aspect of Echoing Fury | Best ❘ S | 2.04 | 180 | |
Flooded Depths | Necromancer | Aspect of Empowering Reaper | Best ❘ S | 1.93 | 216 | |
Light's Watch | Sorcerer | Aspect of Conflagration | Best ❘ S | 1.85 | 216 | |
Belfry Zakara | Druid | Aspect of the Ursine Horror | Best ❘ S | 1.76 | 200 | |
Jalal's Vigil | Rogue | Bladedancer's Aspect | Best ❘ S | 1.75 | 238 | |
Ghoa Ruins | Rogue | Enshrouding Aspect | Best ❘ S | 1.75 | 171 |

How to farm Nightmare Dungeons for XP
To unlock Nightmare Dungeons, you must first:
- Complete the main campaign
- Clear the Cathedral of Light Capstone dungeon (set at level 50)
- Move to World Tier 3 (Nightmare) Difficulty
- Complete and turn in Grim Favors to the Tree of Whispers
The Tree of Whisper will reward you with a cache containing a Nightmare Sigil. Completing Nightmare Dungeons will reward you with more Sigils. After a while, you can go to the Occulist and craft more Sigils (and salvage the ones you do not want to run).
How to reset Nightmare Dungeons?
It is worth noting that you can endlessly farm the same Nightmare Dungeon with a single Sigil, but to achieve that, you’ll need a committed Group:
- Someone in your group starts a Nightmare Dungeon
- Clear the dungeon as a group, but don’t finish it
- Leave the dungeon.
- Promote someone else to party leader
- The new group leader declines to return to their own world state
- The new group leader leaves the group and creates a new one
- The group can once again enter the dungeon
But what if you’re still stuck in World Tier 1 or 2 and can’t access Nightmare Dungeons? In that case, Strongholds are your best option.
Best Leveling XP Farm in Diablo 4 (levels 1 to 50): Stronghold resetting
Strongholds are particularly good at XP farming because you can easily reset them and infinitely farm them ad nauseam. Also, Strongholds have good enemy density, minimal backtracking, and their enemies scale with you, meaning they will always be a few levels higher than your character. This also helps maximize their XP per hour output.
Out of the 15 Strongholds in total, these are the best ones to farm, depending on your current level:
Stronghold | Level | Region | Tier | XP/Hour |
---|---|---|---|---|
Temple of Rot | 35 | Dry Steppes | Best ❘ S | 1580 |
Kor Dragan | 30 | Fractured Peaks | Best ❘ S | 1092 |
Alcarnus | 40 | Kehjistan | Best ❘ S | 1021 |
When using Strongholds for farming XP farming purposes, their recommended level is extremely important. As that recommended level represents the minimum level of the monsters within, you should avoid Strongholds that have monsters that have a much higher level than your character’s. This is how we recommend farming Strongholds:
- Level 15 to 30: Farm Onyx Watchtower
- Level 30 to 50: Farm Temple of Roth
You can find our Strongholds tier list here.
How to reset Strongholds in Diablo 4
Resetting Strongholds in Diablo 4 is straightforward. After clearing all enemies, the game will ask you to find a Shrine and rekindle it to conquer the Stronghold. Instead, you can leave the game and log back in to reset the Stronghold. By doing so, you can clear a Stronghold, leave the game, and come back to reset it and start all over again. This can be done for as many times as you want.
Another valid method? Tree of Whispers. Good XP plus you get Aspects and Renown, and basically more in terms of overall leveling (and not just XP)
Other valid XP farms?
Don’t sleep on the Tree of Whispers catches! These were also buffed and now grant significant XP. Normal Dungeons are no slouches in terms of XP rewarded, but combined with Tree of Whispers catches, the total XP you can get is close to Stronghold farming. Plus, farming Tree of Whispers catches will also give you renown, Dungeon Aspects, and more.
Last but not least, we decided to stay clear of specific exploits as Blizzard is extremely fast as patching them up. Between the moment we publish this and you read it, whatever exploit is valid right now will probably be patched.
