We’ve seen many new weapon frames arrive with The Final Shape and Episode: Echoes. While not all are winners, Guardians have been adding a host of picks to their arsenals.
Today, we’ll cover one of these that arrived with Act One of Echoes: Ill Omen.

How good is Ill Omen
While caster frame swords as a whole don’t appeal to most, Ill Omen’s potent perks and Stasis element carry it above a fair chunk of its competition.
PvE is primarily where Ill Omen suffers from being a caster frame since they have notoriously poor damage and ammo economy. Regardless, its Stasis element and long-range capabilities do allow it to excel in more casual content.
Caster frame swords are much more common in The Crucible because of their longer range and ease of use. While Ill Omen doesn’t necessarily carry strengths that other options don’t, it serves as a great choice regardless.

PvE Roll: All-Around | |

Blade | Enduring Blade |
Guard | Swordmaster’s Guard |
Perk 1 | Unrelenting (also good: Relentless Strikes) |
Perk 2 | Cold Steel (also good: Surrounded) |
Masterwork | Impact |
Because caster frames are intrinsically poor with boss damage, we’ll instead focus on a purely ad-clearing roll here. We’ll begin with Enduring Blade, Swordmaster’s Guard, and an impact masterwork.
From there, Unrelenting and Cold Steel will provide health regeneration and Stasis Slow effects respectively, adding to this weapon’s already-potent ad clear potential. If you are looking to use this in a damage scenario (which we generally don’t recommend), Relentless Strikes with Surrounded is your best bet.
Recommended Loadout: Riptide, Graviton Lance, Ill Omen

PvE Roll: All-Around | |
---|---|
Blade | Enduring Blade |
Guard | Balanced Guard |
Perk 1 | Valiant Charge |
Perk 2 | Cold Steel (also good: Vorpal Weapon) |
Masterwork | Impact |
In PvP, we’ll begin with a nice combination of stat bumps with Enduring Blade, Balanced Guard, and an impact masterwork.
For our third column perk, Valiant Charge offers nice utility if you play into it and can easily catch Guardians by surprise. As for the final column, Cold Steel is extremely strong if utilizing it with the caster frame heavy attack. Vorpal Weapon also isn’t necessarily a bad option, but you’ll feel it working much less frequently.
