Destiny 2 Exotic Engram Focused Decoding: Exotic Armor

After years of having to farm Lost Sectors for Exotics, Bungie is finally giving us a new method to get the Exotic armor we actually want: Exotic Armor focusing.

Exotic armor focusing allows us to spend currencies in order to take Exotic engrams and focus them into specific Exotics (or Exotic families). This guide tells you everything you need to know to get the most out of this feature.

What is Focused Decoding?

Since Season of the Deep (S21), Exotic engrams no longer auto-decrypt but instead sit in your engram inventory. With Exotic armor focusing, players can focus an engram to receive a random roll of a specific Exotic. You have two Exotic Focusing options:

• Focusing Tier 1: Focus an engram into an Exotic from a specific expansion (for example, a random Helm from the Shadowkeep expansion).
• Focusing Tier 2: Focus an engram into the exact Exotic you want (for example, a random roll of the Synthoceps Titan Exotic arms).

The requirements are the following:

• Focusing Tier 1: Ownership of the associated expansion and having previously acquired all armor pieces within the engram for your class.
• Focusing Tier 2: Ownership of the associated expansion and having previously acquired that piece of armor.

Alternatively, if you do not meet these requirements or simply do not want to spend your precious resources into focusing Exotics, you can decrypt the engrams for free. This will give you a random drop from the standard Exotic engram pool.

Destiny 2 Focused Decoding: What to do with Exotic Engrams

Focusing Exotic engrams is as straightforward as it gets. You simply need to take your Exotic Engrams to Master Rahool at the Tower. There, you’ll be able to choose either Tier 1 or Tier 2 focusing:

As you can focus Exotic engrams into an exotic from a specific expansion at a much lower cost, it is worth keeping in mind the following loot pools.

Red War Exotics

The Red War loot pool was so big it had to be further split into one different loot pool per armor slot. Exotics from the Curse of Osiris and Warmind expansions are considered Red War Exotics.

How to farm Exotic Engrams & Exotic Ciphers

Remember that Exotics that drop from dedicated activities that award Exotics, such as Lost Sectors, Vex Strike Force, and Nightfalls, will automatically decrypt into an Exotic.

Exotic engrams shall be available from the following sources:

• Season Pass
• Activities that previously rewarded Pinnacles now reward Exotic engrams

How to get the new Exotic armor in Destiny 2

Exotic armor can be obtained either from Exotic engrams or by completing Legend/Master Lost Sectors solo. Note that the Season pass offers several Exotic engrams. Xur also sells a single Exotic engram per weekend.

There isn’t much more to say about Exotic engrams, only that they have a higher chance to drop from end-game activities. If collecting exotics is your priority, Nightfall: The Ordeals are for you. And the higher the difficulty, the higher the chance of getting one.

Lost Sector farming

If you’re looking for new Exotic armor specifically, those can only be farmed by completing Legend and Master Lost Sectors solo on specific days (Lost Sector rewards are on a daily rotation, one day will reward Legs pieces, the next day only Arms pieces, etc). Before you go…

Not all Exotic armor was created equal. In spite of Bungie routinely buffing and nerfing specific Exotics every Season, some will always be superior.
