After such an eventful first week with a dungeon release, new activities, and potent new weapons, the last thing the Destiny 2 community was expecting was even more content today.
Yet, Bungie delivered, releasing a new exotic quest and mission that’s surprisingly in-depth. Today, we’ll cover how to start and complete the newest exotic quest, “The Taken Path,” culminating in a unique mission and the Barrow-Dyad exotic submachine gun.
How to get The Taken Path Quest
The most tedious part of earning Barrow-Dyad is getting the quest in the first place. What you’re looking for is a specific blight in The Nether that has at least one spawn location in each zone. The problem is, knowing which blight in specific you’re looking for is hard to figure out, and there are multiple reports of Guardians spending numerous runs hunting for the blight with no luck.
We recommend the following: load into the Explore version of The Nether and continue reloading until you start at the Court of Oryx/Hall of Souls area. Here, enter the room that houses the Tormentor encounter and look up. If you see a blight surrounding one of the two pillars, you’re in luck! Pull out your Ghost to spawn invisible platforms and scale the pillar until the blight pulls you in. If you don’t see it, continue loading into the activity until you do.
Once you’re in the blight, you’ll come across the primary puzzle for this quest. Step on the plate in front of you and look in the direction of the Hive symbol. The in-game chat will prompt you with a message that indicates a direction (for this first puzzle, it seems to always say “right”). While continuing to look in the direction of the symbol, walk off the plate in the direction it prompted. This will teleport you to the other side, where a collectible will be waiting. Bring this collectible to the Shaping Slab in Eris’ apartment to start the quest proper.
Complete The Taken Path: The Dyadic Ascension
Step 1: Activate Scotopic Rune
The first step of this quest simply asks you to equip a certain rune within the Shaping Slab. Enter the “Runic Enhancements” section of the vendor and equip the Scotopic Rune (if needed, unequip other runes to have enough available energy).
Step 2: Explore Sorrow’s Harbor
Step two asks you to go to investigate Sorrow’s Harbor on The Moon. Head into this area’s lost sector, K1 Revelation, where you should see a small Taken Blight halfway through (it’s pretty obvious, you can’t miss it). Shoot it to gain access to the plate it was covering, where you’ll do the same mechanic as before: look towards the Hive rune, then walk in the direction it says in chat.
Doing this successfully will teleport you to the beginning of the lost sector again and spawn a plethora of Taken enemies. Defeat the large ogre at the end and pick up the collectible on the ground to complete this step.
Step 3: Explore The Forgotten Shore
This step is near-identical to the last one, except it takes place in a slightly different location. Head to the Veles Labyrinth lost sector in the Forgotten Shore area of The Cosmodrome. The first puzzle plate you’re looking for is in the beginning maze area, also covered by a Taken Blight.
For this puzzle, you’ll need to chain three plates. After successfully completing the first one, you’ll be teleported to the second, and then the third. Completing all three will place you at the end of the lost sector, where you’ll need to fight through Taken enemies to get back to the beginning (the ogre you come across isn’t the last enemy; head through the tunnel behind it to continue). After killing the phalanx in the final room, pick up the next collectible to progress the quest.
Step 4: Return to the Shaping Slab and Break 3 Curses
Return to the Shaping Slab to progress the quest further. Here, the quest will split into three smaller ones: Curse of Revenge, Curse of Urgency, and Curse of Endurance.
Each one of these will have you load into a different zone or activity, all of which have a (pretty obvious) Taken Relic. For each location, pick up the relic and kill as many enemies as possible with it—failure to do so will kill you! After a certain amount of time, the relic will become empowered, at which point you can dunk it in the location marked on your HUD to complete that respective sub-quest.
Work your way through all three locations (Nightmare Hunt: Pride, Sorrow’s Harbor, and the Hallowed Grove lost sector in The Sludge, EDZ) to complete this portion.
Step 5: Find 3 Osseous Fragments in The Nether
To actually complete each of these Curse quests, you’ll need to step back into The Nether. Once again, for this part, we recommend just loading into the Explore version solo.
Your goal is to find three Hive statues. These have static locations and are located in all of The Dreadnaught’s main areas, so you’ll be able to spot one no matter where you spawn. Once you find one, interact with it to spawn a powerful combatant; after defeating it, interact with the statue once more to complete one of the three side quests.
The statue locations for the three areas you can spawn in are below. Note that you don’t need to go to each of the three unique locations—instead, just reload the activity twice more to complete two additional statue encounters, regardless of their location.
In The Mausoleum, jump down and to the right from where you spawn, into the blue tentacle area (not all the way down to the boss room, though). Behind one of the tentacles is the Hive statue.
In the Hall of Souls, the statue is directly to the right of where you spawn. This one is hard to miss.
In the Trenchway, head to the inner area with the large trench. The statue is on the lower side of the two, near the final dunk location for the Solar Crystal event (this one is tucked in a bit and is hidden by shadows, but our picture below should help).
Step 6: Complete the Derealize Exotic Mission
The final step of this chain is to complete Derealize. Most of this mission is pretty self-explanatory, but we’ll guide you through two portions that may cause some trouble.
At some point in the mission, you’ll find yourself trapped inside a Taken Blight with one of the puzzle plates. This time, it has four symbols above it.
Step on the plate and look at the Hive rune. If it matches the leftmost holographic rune in the sequence, look down and move in the direction that the arrow points. If it doesn’t, stand still until you’re teleported to another plate. Continue until all four symbols in the sequence disappear.
Another part that may trip some Guardians up is during a jumping puzzle, where you’ll come across a Hive barrier with three locks on it. Here, you need to destroy three Void crystals to progress.
We’ll let you experience the rest of the mission for yourself. To officially complete The Taken Path, collect Barrow-Dyad and complete the mission. From there, new quests will unlock to upgrade Barrow-Dyad, making the weapon even more potent.
