Destiny 2 Cold Denial Meta Review: The new best Pulse?

by | Aug 23, 2020 | Weapons

Unlike previous seasons, Season of Arrivals has delivered excellent weapons, weapons that we will definitely use for months.

A lot of good things can be said about the Temptations Hook or even the reprised IKELOS weapons, but I would argue Falling Guillotine and Cold Denial steal the show in terms of sheer lethality.

Today, we’ll focus on Cold Denial, the new Best Pulse rifle in Destiny 2, and one of the strongest weapons right now.

First things first. High-impact frame Pulse rifles received a significant PVP buff that made them more consistent and forgiving in the Crucible. And as the newest high-impact pulse in the game, Cold Denial benefits greatly from that buff.

Cold Denial

Weapon Type: Pulse Rifle Slot: Kinetic
Ammo: Primary Source: Umbral Engram
Sunsets: Season 15

High-impact pulses now have a 0.67 seconds TTK (time to kill), which is absurd. And to achieve that you’ll need: 5 headshots and 1 body shot.

On top of having that lethality, Cold Denial has a lot of other great things going for it and I’m sure that by the end of this post, you’ll be convinced this is currently one of the best PVP weapons right now and will start farming god rolls too!

By the way, welcome to our first Meta-Review, a place where we bring together some of the best reviews out there and distill what the top D2 players think about this weapon!

Verdict: What the reviews say

All the best reviews, most of them coming from content creators I religiously follow, agree on the one thing that makes Cold Denial special: a low zoom factor.

Whereas most high-impact Pulses have a 1.8x zoom, Cold Denial has a 1.4x zoom, akin to the zoom of a hand cannon.

On top of that, it has an open and clean sight that helps it excel at close to medium range.

Why I like it so much is that it excels in close to medium range.  […] This pulse is very special, it’s elite.

CoolGuy Review

A close to medium range MONSTER

Because it lacks scopes and has a clean iron sight instead, Cold Denial behaves more like a hand cannon than a traditional Pulse. This makes it easy to use while still retaining that insane TTK all high-impact Pulses share.

Expect to easily challenge hand cannon and auto rifle users on engagements within 30 meters of distance.

Beyond 30 meters, though, Cold Denial shows its biggest weakness…

Out of every high-impact frame pulse rifle on the market right now, even the insanely deadly Redrix’s Broadsword, the Cold Denial is my favorite.

Fallout Plays Review

Limited range

While a 30 meters range is plenty for medium-range engagements, long-range engagements will be a problem. That’s the downside of having no scope and less zoom.

To give you some perspective, Redrix’s Broadsword and Premonition, the two other popular high-impact pulses, have an average maximum range of 40 meters. If you face another pulse or scout in a long range engagement, back out.

⚠ Range can be increased with the right perks, but only ever so slightly. Don’t sacrifice other stats for that.

As far as Pulse rifles go, I think this is one of the best options in the game right now for high-impact pulses.

Pattycakes Review

Solid stats

These are Cold Denial’s weapon stats:

Cold Denial Stats

On paper, nothing seems exceptional or remarkable, except for a high Recoil of 73 at base. That said, the weapon feels much better than what the stats tell us.

Cold Denial will be a top tier Pulse rifle, probably for a good minute. […]  It’s not a Pulse rifle I would pass up.

Aztecross Review

Stable and consistent

In spite of having borderline average stats, everyone agrees the Cold Denial feels great. It’s extremely stable and consistent, which makes it easy to use too. The bullet spread is

Cold Denial is probably one of the most consistent Pulse rifles I’ve used in a long time.

Apathettic Review

Excellent choice of Perks

Cold Denial PerksWe’ll cover the best perks in a moment, but it’s worth mentioning its wide range of great perks is another reason why everyone loves this Pulse rifle.

With so many excellent perks, there isn’t one god roll to find, but potentially many. Your god roll will depend on your playstyle and preferences, but 2 perks definitely stand out:

Killing Wind: “Final blows grant increased mobility, range, and handling”. Expect up to 4 meters of increased range and significantly better mobility and handling.

Headseeker: “Bodyshots landed increase precision damage.” Headseeker makes this weapon much more forgiving, as it allows you to hit the best TTK of 0.67s with only 4 headshots and 2  body shots (instead of 5 and 1 without Headseeker).

The Cold Denial is good no matter what. It is an awesome Pulse rifle because it’s got one of the lowest zoom factors on any pulse in the game.

Mtashed: Review

Very easy to farm

Finally, the last reason why everyone keeps praising Cold Denial is because it’s insanely easy to farm. We cover how to obtain it and farm it in a dedicated section below.

About Barrel and Magazine options

Before we move on to the actual god rolls, it’s important we talk about the weapon’s first two slots.

Cold Denial offers a ton of good barrel and magazine options, but unlike the top tier perks, they depend a lot more on your personal preferences and input method (m&k or controller).

Mouse and Keyboard

If you’re using m&k (mouse & keyboard):

  • Good Barrel options: Arrowhead Brake or Hammer-forged Rifling.
  • Good Magazine options: Ricochet Rounds.

Remember, in this case, range is always good, but not at the cost of other stats.

If you’re using a controller:

  • Good Barrel options: Chambered Compensator or Small Bore.
  • Good Magazine options: Ricochet Rounds.

Remember, stability is extremely important and should be prioritized.

Also, keep in mind that:

  • Increasing Range on Cold Denial does not provide significant improvements
  • Hence, do not sacrifice other stats in order to increase Range as much as possible!
  • All Masterworks are fine, except Reload, as that can be achieved with the proper mods.

Now, on to the god rolls.

Cold Denial God Rolls: What to look for PVP

These are some of the best PVP rolls you can find on a Cold Denial, according to best Cold Denial reviews I found:

PVE God Roll: Rapid Hit (also good: Subsistence) + Rampage (also good: Frenzy)

PVP God Roll: Surplus (also good: Rapid Hit) + Kill Clip (also good: Rampage)

► To see scout rifles become meta was unthinkable just a few months ago, but here we are. After several buffs, scout rifles are back on the menu and the brand-new Servant Leader has everything it takes to rise to the top.

The only kinetic rapid-fire scout in the game, Servant Leader is the perfect replacement for the now-retired Randy's Throwing Knife. With arguably even better base stats than Randy's and a great perk selection, Servant Leader can truly excel in PVE and PVP. If you ever run into a stacked team running Gambit non-stop this season, you can bet they're farming Servant Leaders.

PVE God Roll: Rapid Hit (also good: Outlaw) + Explosive Payload (also good: Rampage)

PVE God Roll: Rangefinder (also good: Rapid Hit) + Opening Shot (also good: Rampage)

► Arguably the most sought-after weapon in the entire Gambit loot pool, Bottom Dollar is one of the best 120 RPM hand cannons in the game. It's so good, some consider it better than the infamous Trials of Osiris' Igneous Hammer. With excellent base stats and very good perks for both PVE and PVP, this is a weapon you don't want to miss.

As with every other Playlist weapon, Bottom Dollar has a huge perk pool, which means that finding a good roll is very difficult. That's the entire reason why some people still farm Gambit...

PVE God Roll: Overflow (also good: Feeding Frenzy) + Rampage (also good: Frenzy)

► One of the latest additions to the Gambit pool, this SMG is more a PVE workhorse. With the classic Reload Speed + Damage buff combo, this is a great weapon for ad clear. It pales in comparison to the Huckleberry SMG, but that’s a bit of an unfair comparison, as Huckleberry is an Exotic and one of its kind.

Needless to say, the good stats, the right archetype (750 RPM SMG), and the right perks make this a good addition to any Guardian's PVE arsenal.

PVE God Roll: Ambitious Assassin (also good: Clown Cartridge) + Chain Reaction

► While not the most impressive grenade launcher on paper, Crowd Pleaser does offer a few excellent perks that more than make up for the average base stats.

Chain Reaction is hands down the perk you'll want, as it's currently one of the best perks for ad clear in the game. Just fire it once at a group of enemies and see them explode to understand what I mean. And as an added bonus, Crowd Pleaser is the only arc grenade launcher that can roll with Chain Reaction.

Takeaways: Where to go from here

The table above says it all. You should be aiming for a Cold Denial with Killing Wind on the third slot as a top priority and either Multikill Clip or Headseeker on the fourth slot.

Note that Feeding frenzy is also highly recommended, as is Swashbuckler. It all boils down to your personal preferences and playstyle.

1. If you’re a decent player and/or enjoy 6v6 modes:

If you can confidently win your first duels, Multikill Clip is a great choice as it will make the weapon that much consistent and deadly as you chain kills.

2. If you’re an average player and/or enjoy 3v3 modes:

Proccing Multikill Clip will be hard, either because chaining kills is easier said than done for you, or because you’re playing Trials or Survival and there aren’t that many enemies out there.

Either way, you may be better off with Headseeker, as it will help greatly help you with every duel you enter.

3. If you rely a lot on your Melee ability:

Finally, if your playstyle and build is based around your Melee, Swashbuckler is the obvious choice.

How to get Cold Denial?

Cold Denia is extremely easy to obtain. Not only can you get an extremely decent roll in the Season Pass, but you can also farm many more roles using the Umbral Engrams system.

The curated role

The curated role is the easiest to obtain. All you have to do is reach level 45 on your Season Pass. The weapon is part of the free track too, so no need to buy Season of Arrivals to get your hands on this sweet Pulse.

Cold Denial Curated Roll

On top of that, the curated role is nothing to scoff at. In fact, virtually every reviewer out there agrees this role is quite good. Not necessarily the best roll out there, but good enough for most.

Cold Denial farm: How to find your God roll

Cold Denial is one of the easiest weapons to farm this season as it’s part of the Umbral engram system. All you need to do is:

  1. Play any activity in the game to earn Umbral engrams (these drop very easily)
  2. Go to the Prismatic Recaster in the Tower (next to the Drifter)
  3. Click on the Umbral Focusing button
  4. Select the Arrival Focused Umbral Engram option
  5. Go to the Umbral Decoder just a few meters away
  6. Decode your focused engrams which should transform into either a Cold Denial or a Falling Guillotine

Cold Denial Focusing

This means each Umbral engram that you focus has a 50% chance of becoming a new Cold Denial. And to make things even better, if you don’t get a Cold Denial, you will get a Falling Guillotine, the other top tier weapon released this season.

Your Turn

You should now be convinced that Cold Denial is a top tier weapon you need to chase before the season is over. And if you still aren’t, just know that even an average PVP player such as myself can consistently do great in the Crucible using it 😅:

Cold Denial experience

Bungie will probably reintroduce ways to obtain it in future seasons, but trust me when I tell you this: It will never be as easy to farm as it is now!
