Past is Prologue: How to Get Bento Tokens & Rewards

by | Jan 21, 2025

Episode: Heresy is right around the corner, and many Destiny 2 players don’t plan to return to the game before then. However, as of today, Bungie has given Guardians one more thing to log in for: Bento Tokens, which grant extremely rare loot from the past year for completing simple gameplay objectives. Here, we’ll cover all the Bento Box quests, the rewards for completing them, and what items to purchase first.

What are Bento Tokens?

Bento Tokens are a form of currency obtained from Bento Box quests, available from The Drifter. You’re only able to obtain eight Bento Tokens total, meaning you’ll need to decide what to spend them on wisely.

After obtaining Bento Tokens, they can be exchanged for rare goods at Eris Morn on The Moon.

This series of quests also grants the fan-favorite Chatterwhite shader, which is offered to Guardians who complete five individual Bento Box quests.

How do you get Bento Tokens?

As stated previously, Bento Tokens are a reward for completing the Bento Box quests offered by The Drifter. As of the writing of this article (January 21), four quests are available, offering a total of five Bento Tokens. These quests are:

  • A Dubious Bento (1 Token): Collect 10 Dubious Celery from defeated targets in Gambit, and collect 10 Century Eggs from defeated combatants on the Moon.
  • Martial Mementos (1 Token): Get a combined total of 200 final blows with Malfeasance, Witherhoard, Touch of Malice, Whisper of the Worm, Xenophage, or Arbalest.
  • The Stuff of Legends (2 Tokens): Finish final encounters in any raid or dungeon. Raids provide additional progress.
  • Nightmare Lunch (1 Token): Complete activities on the Moon. Bonus progress for Nightmare Hunts.

The other three Bento Tokens come from three final quests, which will be available from Xur this weekend and The Drifter next week. These quests are:

  • Snakebite (1 Token): Secure 200 final blows with Gambit weapons.
  • Nightmare Kills (1 Token): Defeat 3 Nightmare bosses and challenging combatants.
  • Dredgens of Yore (1 Token): Get 50 Guardian final blows in Crucible or Gambit. Final blows in Gambit and with Hand Cannons earn additional progress.

There is also one final quest offered by The Drifter that offers the Chatterwhite shader instead of Bento Tokens:

Packed Lunch: Complete 5 Bento Boxes with the Drifter as you fight tactical battles for the City. Bento Box quests are obtained from Drifter in the Tower.

Miscellaneous:

  • Various Mementos: 1 Bento Token each
  • Artifice Armor: 2 Bento Tokens each

Clearly, there are tons of powerful rewards you can obtain through these quests. But with only eight Bento Tokens to spend, what should you prioritize purchasing?

What to get with your Bento Tokens

We first recommend purchasing any legendary weapon rolls that appeal to you. Not only are they cheap, but they’re all great choices if you haven’t cared to farm for other options throughout the year. Cataphract GL3 and Riptide appeal to the PvE sandbox, while Igneous Hammer and Horror’s Least are great choices for The Crucible.

After that, spending your remaining Tokens on materials is your best bet. Gaining a stockpile of materials is extremely important for Destiny 2’s endgame, and all four materials offered are vital when upgrading and purchasing new gear.

Lastly, if your Guardian already has a pretty solid collection of weapons and materials, spending your Tokens on some Artifice Armor (or even Mementos for your weapons!) isn’t a bad decision. While both won’t benefit new players much, they serve as a nice little bonus before Heresy launches in just a few short weeks.
