What if you could pair one of the most powerful ammo perks for Special weapons with the most powerful perk for fusion rifles? Well, Bungie decided to answer that question with Afterlight, the new Void Adaptive Fusion Rifle in Heresy. Sporting both Discord and Reservoir Burst, this gun makes those higher-level Nether runs a breeze. This guide will cover everything you need to know about it.

How good is Afterlight
It’s hard to describe just how strong Afterlight is. While we’ve seen fusion rifles get a reload perk paired with Reservoir Burst, and a few Special weapons get some rather good combinations with Discord, none can match what’s being brought to the table here. While activating it might take a second, once it’s up, you’ve got seven seconds of essentially free ammo, and when paired with Reservoir Burst’s 25% damage bonus, you’ll have no problem getting your refund. But if Discord isn’t your speed, you’ll want the “shiny” version of it so you can use Runneth Over and have extra shots at the ready.
For PvP, it’s a decent weapon, if not a little underwhelming. Most of its stats are on par or worse than its counterparts, and the only “viable” column 4 perks decrease charge time, which is the least of this fusion rifle’s concerns. However, if one pairs Discord and Successful Warm-up, it can be potentially devastating if you manage to chain kills. Afterlight is A-Tier for PvE and C-tier for PvP.

Afterlight PvE god rolls
PvE Roll: All-Around | |
---|---|
Barrel | Fluted Barrel |
Magazine | Accelerated Coils |
Perk 1 | Discord or Lead from Gold (also good: Ambitious Assassin) |
Perk 2 | Reservoir Burst (also good: Destabilizing Rounds) |
Masterwork | Charge Time |
Origin Trait | Runneth Over |
Since we’ll be using this primarily as a swap weapon, we want to get as much handling as possible. For that, Fluted Barrel is perfect as it also gives us a little stability too. Accelerated Coils and a charge time masterwork are paramount to getting the most out of Discord, as you’ll be able to land 2 more bursts before it expires with them on.
Perk 1 has some good PvE options, but none compare to Discord and Lead from Gold. As previously explained, Discord gives any special weapon high-power ad clear thanks to the ammo refund, and Lead from Gold can help if you choose to use this for damage, though you’ll want Runneth Over as well. Ambitious Assassin gets an honorable mention thanks to the rework removing the time requirements, letting you build up a larger mag. And Perk 2, of course, will be Reservoir Burst. While Destabilizing Rounds is a solid choice, Reservoir Burst is both an AoE perk and a damage perk, and considering you’ll be facing stronger targets, it’ll pay to take it over anything else.
Afterlight PvP god rolls
PvP Roll: All-Around | |
---|---|
Barrel | Arrowhead Break |
Magazine | Particle Repeater |
Perk 1 | Under Pressure or Discord |
Perk 2 | Successful Warm-up or Cornered |
Masterwork | Range or Stability |
Origin Trait | Willing Vessel |
Afterlight’s stats are very poor all around, especially its base recoil, which sits at 52. In layman’s terms, the majority of your recoil will trend left, and with the low stability, that’s no good. To offset this, go with Arrowhead Break and Particle Repeater. Arrowhead, when paired with a Counterbalance Stock, bumps the recoil to 97, or almost completely vertical, and the added stability from Particle Repeater will ensure it stays that way. The masterwork is really dependent if you value slightly farther drop off, or more consistent recoil.
Perk 1 has really only Under Pressure or Discord for PvP. Under Pressure is a tried and true perk for fusion rifles as it’s always active, and Discord can let you make aggressive pushes after landing a primary kill. Perk 2 doesn’t fare much better, but Successful Warm-up or Cornered should do you some good. Cornered will work well with either of the perk 1 options, but Successful Warm-up is best paired with Discord, as you won’t always have extra ammo lying around.
How to get Afterlight
As all Heretical weapons from Episode 3, you can obtain the Afterlight from all Heresy activities, most notably the Nether and the new Court of Blades activity. We cover all Heretical weapons here.
Additionally, you can focus the weapon at the Tome of Want for an additional cost by using Scriptures, making it worthwhile to gather materials to get your hands on a good roll of this weapon.
