Destiny 2 Derelict Leviathan Map: Opulent Chests and More

by | May 31, 2022

Season of the Haunted surprised us all with the release of a fully-explorable destination: The Derelict Leviathan.

New patrol areas are usually reserved for fully-fledged expansions, which makes this addition all the more impressive. Naturally, the Leviathan is grabbing all the attention. On top of that, exploring the Derelict Leviathan will also reward you with some top-tier loot, namely, Opulent weapons.

Destiny 2 Leviathan map: New version

The Leviathan is full of important collectibles and chests, but unlike most destinations in Destiny 2, it doesn’t include an in-game map.

This is why many Discord communities went through their archives and dug out old Leviathan maps. These are good starting points, but the Derelict Leviathan is much smaller, and old maps don’t show you what you’re really interested in: Opulent Chests.

Enter this revised version of the Derelict Leviathan map:

While the Leviathan has many secrets to uncover, most keep visiting for one reason and one reason only: Farming Opulent weapons.

Derelict Leviathan’s main areas:

Make no mistake, the original Leviathan is much bigger than this. In fact, a few additional areas have been seen this Season, either as part of the Sever quest or as part of the Duality dungeon. Therefore, the likelihood that the Derelict Leviathan patrol zone gets bigger throughout the year is high.

For now, there are 3 main areas available for free roam:

This is where you’ll land when visiting the Derelict Leviathan. There are no Opulent Chests and few HVT (High-Value Targets). The main activity in this area is, of course, the Nightmare Containment seasonal event.

The Royal Pools and Pleasure Gardens are the areas where most of your exploration will take place. There is where you will find Opulent chests, Nightmares, and HVTs. This is why most updated Leviathan maps focus on these areas.

The gameplay loop often consists of finding an Opulent key in either the Pleasure Gardens or Royal Pools that requires you to find a specific Opulent Chest located in the opposite area.

Therefore, you’ll spend most of your time going from one area to the next.

Farming Opulent chests

With several new currencies to earn and activities to complete, farming Opulent weapons can be intimidating. But unlike Haunted weapons, which require more currencies, farming Opulent weapons is straightforward. There are only 2 methods to acquire Opulent weapons:

  • Opening Opulent Chests
  • Decoding Umbral engrams at the Crown of Sorrow using Opulent Umbral Energy

Finding Opulent chests

Opening Opulent chests require Opulent keys. However, each Opulent Key can only open a very specific Opulent Chest found within the Leviathan. This is why having a map is so important.

The map above includes the location of all Opulent Chests and includes the “hint” provided by Opulent Keys.

Farming Opulent Keys

Opulent Keys can drop from opening Destination chests, Haunted Alcove chests, and Nightmare Containment chests. To increase your chances, target the Elite enemies and Mini bosses, as the chests they drop when defeated have higher chances to contain Opulent Keys.

It’s important to know Opulent Keys do not stack, which means you can only carry one at a time. In other words, once you found one, you should use it immediately.

Your turn

Now that you have a map and understand the gameplay loop required to farm Opulent weapons, your time on the Leviathan should be well-spent.
